The Lagos Police Command is on the trail of a suspected burglar who allegedly posted his picture on the Instagram account of his victim.

The command is working on the lead that the suspect, whose name had yet to be identified, mistakenly posted the picture with one of the phones reportedly stolen from the victim, Sam Abimbola.

The suspect had sneaked into the victim’s residence on Ago Palace Way, Okota, Lagos, at about 3am on Tuesday, carting away phones, a laptop and a passport.

The burglar was said to have gained entry into the apartment through the kitchen.

He also reportedly made away with Abimbola’s wife’s jewellery and the identity card of his sister-in-law, who lived with the family.

While lamenting the loss, Abimbola reportedly got a call at about 7am from a friend, who alerted him to a picture posted with one of the stolen phones on his (Abimbola’s) Instagram page.

Abimbola told Punch that he had woken up around 5am to prepare for work when he discovered the house had been burgled.

He said, “I slept around 2am on that day and my sister-in-law woke me up around 5am, saying that her bag was scattered in the living room.

That was when I discovered that a burglar had entered into my apartment. He cut through the window and got access into the house through the kitchen.

“He entered my bedroom, stole my passport, laptop, two phones – a Samsung Note 5 and a Samsung tablet – my sister-in-law’s ID card and her money.

The burglar also stole my wife’s accessories and took some bottles of water from the fridge.

“I don’t know the extent of what was stolen from my wife’s valuables because she was not around. He ransacked a bag where my credentials were but fortunately, he didn’t go with them.

“Around 7am, he mistakenly posted his picture on my Instagram account with my phone. I am sure he must have used the phone to take the picture.

“I have reported to the police at the Ago Palace division and some of the policemen said he was a known face at a joint in the area.”

The sister-in-law, who did not want her name in print, urged the police to track down the suspect and bring him to book.

Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmos, who confirmed the burglary, said the police were on the trail of the suspect and he would be apprehended.

over new customers and even gaining converts from other brand’s 
loyalists. Just after this success stint, they began to release very 
competitive high-end devices targeted at the middle and upper-class 
customers who had more disposable income to purchase smartphones thereby
 eating farther into the market share of the global brands for these 
classes of customers.
Now, after several product releases for people of every class, Tecno 
has comfortably positioned itself as a force to reckon with when it 
comes to driving mobile phone brand penetration and market dominance in 
Africa. They have successfully used their pragmatic innovation and 
market knowledge to release great products that are tailored to African 
market needs year on year.

To avert a 
repeat of the last year’s tragedy, the Saudi authorities have rolled out
 rules to guide the “stone the devil” ritual in Jamarat during this 
year’s pilgrimage.<br />

They warned that any pilgrim who violates the schedule would be arrested and prosecuted.<br />

The warning is coming against the backdrop of the stampede which left
 more than 2000 pilgrims dead and scores injured during last year’s 
hajj.<br />

A representative of the Saudi Arabia Hajj Ministry, Sheikh Mohammed, in a
 meeting with African officials in Mina yesterday, said arrangements had
 been concluded to assign guides who would lead a group of 250 pilgrims 
at a time to the Jamarat and back.
He said the government was putting in place measures to avoid the 
stampede that marred the exercise last year, noting that any pilgrim 
seen alone in Jamarat would be arrested and prosecuted.<br />

Mohammed also disclosed that each group would not be led by a Saudi 
guide alone, but states would also nominate one for the groups.<br />

State officials responsible for the erring pilgrim would also face sanction.<br />

Mohammed, whose remarks were interpreted by an official of the 
National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Aliyu Tanko, said the 
Saudi government was adopting the kind of schedule used for airlines at 
the airport.<br />

“Take this schedule and timing as serious as the time for prayers,” he advised.<br />

Meanwhile, a female pilgrim reportedly passed on yesterday in the 
city of Madina. The deceased, whose identity could not be immediately 
ascertained, was said to have died after performing the morning Subh 
prayers in the Prophet’s mosque in Madina.<br />

The passage was, however, confirmed by an official of NAHCON, but 
declined to give details because he was not authorised to comment on the
 incident.<br />

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Rabiu Yusuf, disclosed this while 
briefing newsmen on the achievements of the command since he assumed 
duty in the state.<br />

He said that the suspects who had been operating around the Falgore 
and Gomo forests, were apprehended in Doguwa and Sumaila local 
government areas of the state.<br />

He said that during operations, the police arrested a wanted notorious 
kidnapper, Nasiru Tasi’u of Bakin Dajin Gomo in Sumaila Local Government
 Area.
He explained that while some of the suspects were arrested following 
tip-off, others were nabbed during various raids on the kidnappers’ den.<br />

The commissioner attributed the success recorded to the redeployment 
of all officers under the Anti-kidnapping unit to the area to complement
 the efforts of the conventional police.<br />

“The Rano Area Commander was directed to relocate his office to the 
most affected axis to ensure effective supervision of the men deployed, 
‘’he said.<br />

Yusuf said that items recovered from the suspects include four 
fabricated AK47 rifles, nine motorcycles, two face masks, 96 cows, 33 
sheep and one dog.<br />

Others are: 56 rounds of live ammunition, some quantity of drugs, two
 expanded cartridges, two cell phones, a bow and arrow, axe and machete 
and N200, 000 cash.<br />

He said that the police would continue to partner with other security agencies to flush out criminals in the state.<br />

“Crime fighting is a collective effort, so we call on good citizens 
of the state to partner with the police to secure and keep Kano State 
safer for both political and economic activities to flourish,” the 
commissioner said.<br />

In his remarks, the District Head of Doguwa, Alhaji Aliyu Harazimi, 
who attended the briefing along with other traditional rulers from the 
area, commended the commissioner for his efforts to check activities of 
hoodlums in the area.<br />

Republican 
presidential candidate Donald Trump landed just ahead of Democrat 
Hillary Clinton in a new national poll released Tuesday, which showed 
the real estate mogul chiseling away at his opponent’s former lead.<br />

Trump beat Clinton 45 to 43 percent in the new CNN/ORC Poll, which 
showed stark divisions in the way different demographics plan to cast 
their ballots.<br />

Clinton has mostly maintained an edge over Trump in recent national 
polls. She has dramatically deeper ground operations in swing states and
 trounced Trump in August fundraising.<br />

But the Republican flagbearer’s unorthodox White House bid, including
 his campaign’s apparent imperviousness to criticism about his harsh 
rhetoric, assures a tight contest leading up to November 8.<br />

The near tie in the latest CNN/ORC results came in sharp contrast to 
Clinton’s eight-point lead among registered voters in its early August 
poll following the Democratic Convention.<br />

According to CNN, huge gaps exist in voting preference based on gender, age, race, education and partisanship.<br />

Women prefer Clinton 53 to 38 percent, while men favor Trump 54 to 32 percent, it said.<br />

Voters younger than 45 give Clinton an edge (54 percent to 29 percent
 for Trump), while non-whites favor Clinton by almost four-to-one, poll 
results showed.<br />

Enthusiasm for the overall 2016 campaign remains comparatively low. 
Almost half of voters say they are less enthusiastic about voting this 
year than in previous elections, with just 42 percent reporting that 
they’re more excited.<br />

This marks the first time since 2000 that a significantly larger 
share of voters say they are less excited, CNN polling results indicate.<br />

The CNN/ORC poll was conducted from September 1 to 4 by telephone 
among a random sample of 1,001 adults. It included results from 886 
registered voters and 786 likely voters. For results among registered or
 likely voters, the margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage 
points.<br />

crescent, Alaura Oregun in Lagos state. According to eyewitnesses, he 
was actually drunk and lost balance and next thing, he was swimming 
helplessly. Thankfully, people were alerted and were able to rescue and

The US Open quarter-finals kick off on Tuesday with Serena Williams 
saying she’s just getting warmed up — an ominous assessment for the 
other seven women with eyes on the prize.<br />

“She’s coming, she hasn’t quite come out yet, though,” the world 
number one said of the dominating “Serena” who went missing in action 
after Wimbledon in large part because of a sore right shoulder.<br />

That seems astonishing, since Williams has reached the last eight without dropping a set or indeed even dropping her serve.<br />

“I just feel like I’m going out there doing what I need to do,” she 
said. “I’m not overplaying, I’m not underplaying. I’m just trying to 
play my way into this tournament.”
She has played her way into a quarter-final against fifth-seeded

matches.<br />

Williams said that record wasn’t necessarily a guide to the challenge Halep would pose.<br />

“To me it doesn’t really matter who I play because I have to expect 
they’re going to play the match of their life,” she said. “That’s how I 
go into these matches now.”<br />

They’ll headline women’s action on Wednesday, when Ana Konjuh and 
Karolina Pliskova meet in a battle of first-time Grand Slam 
quarter-finalists.<br />

Konjuh, an 18-year-old ranked 92nd in the world, shocked fourth-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 6-4 to reach the last eight.<br />

She avenged a second-round loss at Wimbledon in which she held three match points against the Pole.<br />

Pliskova, the 10th seed, defeated sixth-seeded Venus Williams 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/3).<br />

On Tuesday, world number two Angelique Kerber — who toppled Williams 
in the Australian Open final and who has a chance to end the American’s 
reign atop the world rankings here — takes on Roberta Vinci.<br />

The seventh-seeded Italian stunned Williams in the semi-finals last 
year before falling to compatriot Flavia Pennetta in the final.<br />

Tuesday’s other quarter-final sees Caroline Wozniacki, derailed this 
year by an ankle injury that sent her career into a tailspin, taking on 
Latvian Anastasija Sevastova, back and on the best Grand Slam run of her
 career after quitting the sport three years ago.<br />

Wozniacki, a former world number one, is back in the last eight of a 
Slam for the first time since her second runner-up finish in New York in
 2014.<br />

She won’t be taking Sevastova lightly, despite the fact that the 
Latvian’s previous best run in a major was to the fourth round of the 
2011 Australian Open.<br />

“She’s a tough player,” Wozniacki said. “She has a lot of grit and 
good hands. It’s not going to be an easy one, but I’m excited just to have another shot.”

 Coleman backed Gareth Bale to break Ian Rush’s national goal-scoring 
record after his brace inspired the Euro 2016 semi-finalists to a 4-0 
defeat of Moldova.<br />

Bale scored three times as Wales reached the last four at Euro 2016 
and he struck twice in Monday’s home win over Moldova to give Coleman’s 
men a winning start in 2018 World Cup qualifying.<br />

They were the Real Madrid star’s 23rd and 24th Wales goals and with 
Rush now just four goals above him, Coleman believes Bale could be his 
country’s leading scorer by the end of the qualifying campaign.<br />

“He will break it. If you look at his record in the last two years, 
you’d have to say he has every chance of doing it in this campaign,” 
Coleman told reporters at Cardiff City Stadium.<br />

“He may know he’s four goals away. He won’t think, ‘I’ve got to beat him (Rush) this campaign.’<br />

“He’ll just go and do what he does, but in my opinion there’s every chance he can do that in the next nine games.”<br />

Bale, 27, top-scored for Wales with seven goals in qualifying for 
Euro 2016 and his last 20 international strikes have been scored in just

A man was found dead on Tuesday, September 6th in Thailand after 
live streaming his suicide via Facebook Live. Charoen Chimphuk was found
 dead inside an apartment in Soi  Phaholyothin, Bangkok, the morning 
after he filmed himself hanging himself in a streaming video which ran 
for about 30 minutes.

His 24 year old wife, Sangrawee Omdee, told police she rushed to the  
residence after seeing the 30-year-old was preparing to hang himself  
through the live broadcast streamed via his personal account on 11:46pm.<br />

making preparations for about 19 minutes to hang himself from a  ceiling
 fan. He is mostly silent the entire time apart from some  comments

His body remains suspended motionless for another dozen minutes or  so. 
The video is still available but a content warning had been added by 
Facebook by Tuesday afternoon.</div>

"His wife was not suspicious about his death and believes it was a  
suicide," said police Col. Amnat Intharasuan of Bang Khen Police  
Station. "Though the case is being investigated by the police’s office  
of forensic science, as it must be."</blockquote>
Sangrawee told police she has lived with Charoen for five years, and  
the two have a 3-year-old daughter. She recently found out he was having
 an affair with another woman, so she had left him. She said the room 
where Charoen hanged himself was where he went to see the other woman. 
Police said they did not find the live video suspicious and believe

British Black Lives Matter protesters on Tuesday chained themselves 
together on the runway of London’s City Airport, forcing all flights in 
and out of the business travel hub to be diverted.<br />

Police officers were negotiating with nine protesters, who had 
“erected a tripod and have locked themselves together,” according to a 
statement from the Metropolitan Police.<br />

“At 05:40hrs (0440 GMT) on Tuesday, 6 September, officers were 
alerted to a number of protesters who had made their way airside at 
London City Airport,” it added.<br />

“We are awaiting the arrival of specialist resources that are able to ‘unlock’ the protesters. No arrests have been made.”<br />

The airport said in a statement that it was “currently experiencing disruption to all flights due to protesters.”<br />

All flights due to land at the airport were diverted to Southend and Gatwick airports near London.<br />

The Twitter page of Black Lives Matter UK claimed responsiblity for 
the protest, saying it was to highlight the “UK’s environmental impact 
on black people”.<br />

“7/10 of the countries most affected by climate change are in sub-Saharan Africa,” said another tweet<br />

Pictures from the airport showed the protesters lying down on the 
tarmac beneath a wooden tripod, next to a sign reading: “Climate Crisis 
is a Racist Crisis.”<br />

London City Airport is located in docks east of the city centre, and 
close to Canary Wharf, one of the twin centres of London’s finance 
industry.<br />

The airport offers short-haul flights to locations in Britain and 
mainland Europe, and served over four million passengers last year, many
 of them traveling for business.<br />

Its sole runway is surrounded by water, but it was reported that the 
protesters were able to swim from land surrounding the airport, raising 
questions about security.<br />

Activists from Britain’s Black Lives Matter movement blocked the main
 road into London Heathrow, Europe’s busiest airport, last month as part
 of a nationwide day of protests against racism.

that it was the usual ‘April fool’. But this is August and so when her 
close friends, fans and colleagues saw the post that the dark 
complexioned actress, singer and show host sent out to formally announce
 her one-year-old ‘marital status’, they were shocked stiff. ‘When did 
this happen….when did you get married that we didn’t know’, was how a 
few of her fans and colleagues reacted on her instagram handle.

Those who didn’t want to engage her on social media simply 
congratulated her but as the actress who made name playing Jumoke in the
 long rested sitcom on television ‘Fuji House of Commotion’ later 
revealed, she has not stopped receiving inbox messages and calls from 
people who wondered why she didn’t publicize her marriage ceremony or 
who felt that she should have made her marriage to Brian Ahern, who is 
Irish, public. ‘’But my brother, it is true oo and it is for real’’ 
Chika said in response to a question on whether the post she made about 
her new status was for real or a mere stunt. ‘’I personally don’t do 
loud as a policy. I like to keep things simple and low so as not to bug 
people. But it is for real. Make people no vex’’ she said, sounding 
apologetic.<br />

So it is official. Chika Chukwu is well taken. In fact, her marriage 
to Brian is a year old and Chika revealed that ‘agreeing to be joined as
 wife to Brian’ is one of the best decisions she has taken in her entire
 life. ‘’My brother, I am indeed lucky to have a partner who truly gets 
me oooh. He is my greatest support system and encourages me to do more 
and to believe that I can achieve a lot more’ she enthused.<br />

But was it love at first sight? How did they meet? And Chika snapped and
 in her usual humorous style she said ‘’Mba (Igbo for No) not love at 
first sight ooo. We were friends for a couple of years before we started
 dating and agreed to settle down as man and wife last year. I think the
 best way of saying how we met is to say Brian found me’’.
Born in Onitsha, Anambra State to a mum who is from Onitsha and a 
retired custom officer dad who is from Enugu, Chika revealed that it is a
 whole new experience for her combining her career as a performer and 
taking care of the home front in the UK. ‘’I guess for everyone, life is
 what it is and of course, I prioritize my family and we will figure out
 a way to schedule work so that it works. Plus being a producer too now 
enables me delve more into different charted waters’’.<br />

A quality hand, whom every good producer should have on their set 
especially if they desire an actress that can interprete roles 
delightfully, Chika is best remembered for her role as jumoke—the fiery 
daughter of Chief Fuji who will lead the ‘rebel’ forces on an onslaught 
against anyone or group of persons who dare disturb the peace of her mum
 or deny her siblings any entitlement in the fictional world of Amaka 
Igwe’s long-running situation comedy Fuji House of Commotion. Just a 
statement that she finds offensive and Jumoke will lead the ‘rebel’ 
forces who are majorly her direct siblings to cause a commotion that 
will take the whole day to settle. As Jumoke, Chika shone like a 
thousand stars. The actress, singer and event manager displayed a 
commendable degree of energy, skill and resourcefulness. She put up a 
high wire act in that series and in other movie productions that has 
made her a notable screen figure.<br />

Amiable and friendly, acting for Chika came naturally. Chika revealed
 that she showed as a tot that she was art inclined. She grew up always 
wanting to be the person that was being watched. She also exhibited the 
ability to perform popular songs by notable musicians like the legendary
 Michael Jackson. She did them so well that she became something of a 
child star artiste. No wonder then that her parents, family members and 
close friends say they were not surprised when they saw her performing 
on television.<br />

Chika made her screen debut between 1998 and 2000. Notable movie 
director Moses Ebere provided the back on which she climbed to secure 
other roles in moviedom when he cast her to play in two movies that he 
directed -Liquid Love and Liberation. It was same period that she was 
engaged as a presenter on Silver Screen Television. Chika was host of 
the Friday night musical chart show titled Soul to Soul. In between too,
 she met with the Player Meji crooner Idris Abdulkareem while working on
 the sound track for Jeta Amata’s Tear of the Woman. Chika was later to 
work under Idris as a backup singer. She was so lavish with thanks to 
the pop singer for giving her the baton to move on in music.
But even while working under Idris, Chika found time to do some 
acting. She got her big break when she was cast after an intense 
audition exercise to play Jumoke, the quarrelsome daughter of Chief Fuji
 in Fuji House of Commotion. ‘I went for the audition and that was it. I
 was offered the role and we got straight to work after Amaka Igwe got 
back to me. On my first day on set, I was terrified because there were a
 whole lot of people around and I just concluded that like the title of 
the series, I was in for some confusion. But I must say that I had the 
most fabulous time ever doing Fuji House of Commotion. It will always be
 my all time favourite not just because it made me popular, but because 
it gave me an opportunity to be two different persons in one. It got to a
 time when people started calling me a rebel leader even off set’ she 
said.<br />

From Fuji House, Chika moved on and took part in a number of movies 
including Pius Okugbere’s Royal Tears, and more recently ‘The Meeting’ 
and Omoni Oboli’s ‘Being Mrs. Elliot’. Of all her screen outing, Chika 
picked her performance as Jumoke in Fuji House of Commotion as her most 
memorable screen appearance yet. She also liked her delivery in Tempest,
 another Amaka Igwe production.<br />

‘I think that I will say that my role in Fuji House kept me in the minds
 of viewers. But importantly, I would say that working with Amaka Igwe 
on Fuji House of Commotion and on Tempest, prepared me for a lot of 
things in my career. For instance, it taught me the importance of team. 
And really every movie and series I have done as an actor has its own 
bank of memories and without which there would be a hole in my life.’.
A singer whose single ‘Beautiful’ enjoyed some airplay when it was 
released, Chika revealed that she is working on a full album release 
soon. She explained that the reason it is ‘taking time to drop’ is 
because she doesn’t ‘want to drop an album just for the fun of it’. She 
also said ‘I am not in music for fame and money. It is actually about 
fulfillment, about the surge I get when I am on a stage. It is something
 that I have always wanted to do. I am happier when I am singing and In 
fact, most people around me think I come alive whenever I am singing. 
And gradually with each song I finish in the studio, I see myself 
heading towards a direction—African Neo-Soul. I actually do love 
singing. It will not be a one-off. I am in music for good’.<br />

Focused and down to earth, Chika star of Liquid Love, Sad Christmas, 
Hell Ride, War Victims, Sister Mary, Liberation and Tears of a Woman, 
hopes to continue producing her own movies and she also looks forward to
 playing a raised game either as a singer or actress. ‘I I also look 
forward to continue producing my own body of works as a creative artiste
 with stories to tell. Like we know, every drop in the pond, creates 
many ripples’’ she surmised.<br />

The above quote culled from the winning essay of Fadilah Saliu-Ahmed 
from Zamani College, Kaduna State, jolted the audience who had gathered 
last week at the Muson Centre in Lagos for the 17th Mike Okonkwo annual 
lecture.<br />

It set the mood for a scintillating discourse on the theme of the 
event, which is ‘The state of the Nigerian nation: Redefining our 
values,’ anchored by Chief Arthur Mbanefo, with Mr. Frank Nweke Jnr and 
Mr. Gbenga Sesan as speakers.<br />

The annual lecture, instituted in 2000 as part of activities to mark 
the birthday of the Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission
 (TREM), Dr. Mike Okonkwo, has been the clergyman’s contribution to 
nation building. Each occasion has addressed and offered probable 
solutions to critical national issues.<br />

This year, amid growing public distaste towards the avarice of the 
present crop of leaders, Okonkwo, who turned 71 years last Thursday, 
blamed all acts of terrorism, insurgency and other vices currently 
rocking the country on dysfunctional family value systems.<br />

While acknowledging that the masses were expecting a lot from those 
in authorities, he said until we restore our value systems, government 
would not be able to do much.<br />

“Our values have been eroded in this country. Every system is 
virtually breaking down and it has to do with values as individuals and 
as Nigerians. We got it wrong when we started celebrating money much 
more than character and performance.”<br />

He, therefore, called on parents to rise up to their responsibilities
 by instilling moral values into their children, which, he said, would 
bring the needed change for Nigerians.<br />

On his part, Lagos State governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, said 
Nigerians, irrespective of religious, tribal and political affiliations,
 should join hands with government to build a strong, united and virile 
country.<br />

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji 
Bello, the governor said: “All nations derive their identities from 
entrenched values, which are transmitted from generation to generation 
by families.<br />

“These give the strength and historical direction towards greatness 
for individuals and countries. We need to retrace our steps to the 
values laid down by the founding fathers of this nation,” he said.

President Rodrigo Duterte expressed regret Tuesday that a tirade against
 Barack Obama, in which he called the US leader a “son of a whore”, came
 across as a personal attack.<br />

Longtime allies the United States and the Philippines have seen 
relations plunge under a barrage of insults from Duterte since he came 
to office on June 30.<br />

The latest Duterte outburst came on Monday before a planned meeting between the leaders at a regional summit in Laos.<br />

Obama responded to the outburst by cancelling the talks, which prompted a Duterte to offer a qualified expression of regret. <br />

“While the immediate cause was my strong comments to certain press 
questions that elicited concern and distress we also regret it came 
across as a personal attack on the US president,” a statement released 
by Duterte said.<br />

The 71-year-old former prosecutor was referring to his remarks on 
Monday, when he warned he would not be lectured by Obama over concerns 
about a brutal war on drug crime that has claimed more than 2,400 lives 
in the Philippines.<br />

“You must be respectful. Do not just throw away questions and 
statements. Son of a whore, I will curse you in that forum,” Duterte 
told reporters when asked about his message for Obama.<br />

Duterte, who has quickly earned a global reputation for his jibes, 
then used typically colourful language to describe their planned meeting
 if rights issues came up.<br />

“We will be wallowing in the mud like pigs if you do that to me,” he said.<br />

Duterte’s about-turn on Tuesday said both sides would hold face-to-face talks “at a later date”.<br />

“Our primary intention is to chart an independent foreign policy 
while promoting closer ties with all nations especially the US with 
which we have a longstanding partnership,” Duterte’s statement said.<br />

The Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs added Duterte had “a

Duterte has angrily rejected criticism from the Catholic Church, 
human rights groups, legislators and the United Nations over his drug 
purge.<br />

During his Monday outburst he said the bloodbath would continue.<br />

“More people will be killed, plenty will be killed until the last 
pusher is out of the streets. Until the (last) drug manufacturer is 
killed, we will continue and I will continue,” he said.<br />

He also added he would not take orders from the United States, a 
former colonial ruler of the Philippines, and did not care about how he 
was perceived.<br />

“I don’t give a shit about anybody observing my behaviour,” he said.<br />

In a bid to 
entrench the values of accountability, integrity and inculcate positive 
attitudinal change in Nigerians, the Federal Government is set to launch
 the “Change Begins With Me” campaign.<br />

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, and the
 Director-General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr Garba Abari, 
made this known in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria 
(NAN) in Abuja.<br />

They said that the campaign was aimed at educating and enlightening 
Nigerians to appreciate these values which, they noted, are critical to 
achieving comprehensive national development.<br />

According to them, the campaign is expected to trigger positive 
change that will boost Nigeria’s image, enable the country gain 
acceptability and command respect in the comity of nations.<br />

The minister said that President Muhammadu Buhari would launch the programme on Thursday in Abuja.<br />

“About three to five years back now, the role models in the society were people of doubtful character.<br />

“Money was worshipped; nobody cared where and how one got the money; these are the misplaced values that we are tackling now.’’<br />

He said that the campaign would involve every Nigerian and address the shortcomings of every profession and jobs.<br />

Mohammed said that the campaign would also feature slogans that could
 be easily assimilated by the people, in order to correct identified 
ills in the society.<br />

“We believe that what is wrong with Nigeria is not limited to the 
elite, the political class and the civil service; if we want that 
change, therefore, it must address all the issues and target every 
stratum of the society.’’<br />

Mohammed said that the campaign was not a replication of the “War 
Against Indiscipline’’ which the Buhari-led military administration 
initiated in 1983 but that it would achieve the same goal using a 
different means.<br />

“In 1983, they used what they had to achieve what they wanted, which 
was to correct the decadence in society, tackle corruption and impunity.<br />

“However, in the area of enforcement, people alleged infractions and intimidation.<br />

“But here, we are going to use the media to appeal to people. We are 
going to use persuasion, instead of coercion and intimidation.<br />

“Our various platforms will be radio, television, print media, 
billboards, social media and the like. Part of our campaign will also be
 concerts which will be sponsored by people in the private sector.’’<br />

The minister, therefore, solicited the support of the private sector towards the success of the campaign.<br />

Mohammed said that the National Orientation Agency (NOA) would be the
 flagship body driving the campaign, to ensure that it gets to the 
grassroots.<br />

He further said that NOA had the duty to its success in states local 
government areas and schools, while traditional rulers and leaders of 
faith organisations were also expected participated actively in driving 
the campaign.<br />

In a separate interview, the NOA director-general noted that the 
programme was also aimed at fighting corruption and encouraging peaceful
 co-existence in the country.<br />

He said it was regrettable that corruption had done a lot of damage to every sphere of the country.<br />

“The Fight against corruption must not begin with the government; people must be in the vanguard of fighting corruption.<br />

“Our schools, roads, hospitals should have been better than what they are now, but corruption has stalled their development.<br />

“What would you say about a woman who uses chemical to forcefully 
ripen banana and sell it to the public; what about a woman who would use
 a padded `mudu’ to sell rice.<br />

“A petrol attendant who would claim not to have change so that the 
buyer would leave the change; all these are corruption,’’ Abari said.<br />

He noted that lecturers in tertiary institutions also engaged in 
corrupt practices by selling handouts to students, while lazy students 
also cut corners by selling their bodies and giving money to pass 
examinations.<br />

According to him, the change must start at the individual level and inevitably extend to the society and country at large.<br />

“Nobody is happy with the way corruption has relegated the country to
 its present situation. We, the citizens, must take a second hard look 
at what we did wrong that we will not do tomorrow.<br />

“The change must start with the people in the little things they do 
in their families, place of work and responsibilities,’’ Abari said.<br />
