are high in salt, sugar; fructose syrup and fat. These ingredients are 
added to processed foods to make their flavour more appealing and to 
prolong their shelf life, or in some cases to contribute to the food’s

These foods are higher in calories due 
to the high amounts of added sugar or fat in them. Sugar is empty 
calories; it has no essential nutrients, but produces a large amount of 
energy. By nature, our appetite gravitates toward foods that are sweet, 
salty and fatty because these are the foods we need for survival, 
however, this results in people consuming more than the recommended 
amounts, because they are unaware of how much has been added to the 
foods.</div>

Processed foods are extremely low in 
nutrients compared to whole foods. In many cases, synthetic vitamins and
 minerals are added to the foods to compensate for what was lost during 
processing. These synthetic nutrients are not to be compared to those 
found in whole foods.</div>

Processed foods are high in trans-fat, 
which raises the level of cholesterol in the blood. Elevated levels of 
cholesterol increase the chances of developing cardiovascular disease.

• 2 smoked catfish<br />

• 1 kilogramme of lean beef<br />

• 3 bunches of waterleaves (washed, shredded)<br />

• 2 small stockfish<br />

• 3 cups of (melon) <i>egusi </i> (ground)<br />

<strong>Method</strong><br />

Wash, salt, season, and cook the beef, stockfish and fish until the 
meat is quite tender. Continue the boiling and add the palm oil, 
crayfish, pepper and the onions, boil for another three minutes. Stir 
and add the ground <i>egusi</i>, cover and simmer for two minutes, before adding the shredded waterleaves and <i>ugu</i> leaves. Stir thoroughly and simmer for two minutes. Remove from heat and serve alongside hot <i>iyan</i>, that is, pounded yam.<br />

<strong>Chilli, full-fat milk, chicken and citrus fruits can help woman conceive, says new book</strong><br />

IN an era where one in seven couples have problems conceiving, many are desperate to find ways to help themselves.<br />

The options are far ranging, from ovulation kits to acupuncture – and the far more invasive In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF).<br />

But one fertility expert argues that diet can make a huge contribution to success.<br />

Zita West, a midwife and fertility expert, says her research and 
experience proves a good diet ‘forms the bedrock of getting a woman’s 
body baby-ready and a man making healthy sperm’.<br />

Below, in an extract from her new book, Eat Yourself Pregnant: 
Essential Recipes for Boosting Your Fertility Naturally, she explains 
which foods can help with conception…<br />

As a practising midwife and fertility expert, I have always been 
fascinated by the role nutrition takes in every couple’s ability to have
 a healthy, happy baby.<br />

Over the course of my many years in this field, I have come to 
the conclusion that micronutrients play a big role in getting pregnant –
 both naturally and through assisted conception – with deficiencies 
having significant effects on fertility for both men and women.<br />

However, I also think that couples who want to make a baby need to have treats.<br />

Who could live without bread, chocolate, cheese and dairy? Not me!<br />

Whether you are just embarking upon trying for a baby, have been 
trying for a while without success, or have been diagnosed with a 
fertility problem, I want to reassure you that my philosophy is simple: 
strict or faddy diets involve too many restrictions – they make what is 
the most normal and natural thing in the world seem strange and 
unfamiliar.<br />

My focus is on nourishing the body in a positive, sustainable way
 most of the time – not on challenging you to be 100 per cent perfect.<br />

I believe that small changes that are manageable within the context of your everyday life are all that you need.<br />

Quite simply, your pre-conception diet has to fit in with your 
‘normal’ life or you won’t be able to keep it up. Small steps can go a 
long way.<br />

I am very aware that many of the issues that come between a 
couple – just when they need most to be together – relate to lifestyle.<br />

I particularly see the contention that can build up around what food and drink lands on the supper table.<br />

I often find that one partner is trying to be too rigid, while the other wants to take a more relaxed approach.<br />

I think everyone can be happy – and that the resulting 
togetherness can only mean that you create more chances of making a 
baby.<br />

My approach to fertility is integrated – modern medicine combined with the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine.<br />

By encouraging the body to produce certain neurotransmitters – 
chemicals that act like neurotransmitters, some foods can influence mood
 and your desire for sex, she says.<br />

Most importantly, this approach has taught me of the need for 
balance between all the body’s systems – if one system is out of kilter,
 there is a ripple effect that touches every aspect of your well-being, 
including your fertility.<br />

Furthermore, I think the connection between mind and body has a 
huge role to play in a couple’s ability to conceive, which is why I 
think it’s important that your lifestyle choices are good and healthy, 
but also make you happy.<br />

When I first meet a couple, I want to find out about the 
following things: their digestion and gut health, toxicity, immunity, 
and how much their states of mind are affecting their bodies.<br />

Only then can I begin to advise them on how to balance all these
 aspects of themselves to make the journey to parenthood a successful 
one.<br />

FOODS FOR MOOD AND LIBIDO<br />

By encouraging the body to produce certain neurotransmitters, or 
chemicals that act like neurotransmitters, some foods can influence mood
 and your desire for sex.<br />

<strong>Dopamine</strong><br />

This chemical helps us feel positive and motivated and is present in high levels during sexual excitement.<br />

amino acid tyrosine, which is found in bananas, oats, eggs and dairy

Foods rich in tyrosine include chicken, lean red meat and 
turkey; cod, pike, shellfish and tuna; eggs and dairy products; avocado

<strong>Serotonin</strong><br />

This is the body’s mood-booster. The body converts the amino acid tryptophan to make it.<br />

Tryptophan-rich foods include chicken, lamb and turkey; cod, 
halibut, salmon, sardines and tuna; asparagus, leafy green vegetables, 
potatoes, seeds and soya beans; and yogurt.<br />

<strong>Phenylethylamine</strong><br />

A mild stimulant, this is produced in your body as a by-product of the amino acid phenylalanine.<br />

It’s the chemical that gives you that butterflies feeling when 
you first fall in love, making it great for reinvigorating the flush of 
desire. Chocolate is a good source of phenylethylamine.<br />

Chicken is a good source of tryptophan, an amino acid the body 
uses to make serotonin. Tryptophan-rich foods include chicken, lamb and 
turkey as well as cod, halibut, sardines and tuna.<br />

<strong>THE FUNDAMENTAL ROLE OF DIET</strong><br />

Food – and all the things it’s related to, from your digestion 
to your gut health – plays a crucial role in optimising your fertility.<br />

This is where preparing to make a baby begins, at the basics – the way your whole body works<br />

Quite simply, the right nutrients give you the right building 
blocks for making a baby. What then should you and your partner include 
and eliminate in your diet in order to optimise your chances of 
conceiving?<br />

However, I don’t want to be prescriptive; I think hard-and-fast rules are hard to stick to.<br />

Instead, I want to show you how nutrition and fertility are 
inextricably linked, so that you can make informed choices about your 
diet.<br />

Then, because your diet is one that you’ve carved out for 
yourself, you should be able to sustain it in the long term and so 
properly enhance your chances of conceiving.<br />

First, though, I want you to assess what your nutrition looks 
like now, so that you have a better idea of why and how you need to make
 changes. (Note that, when I say ‘you’, I mean both of you.)<br />

If you frequently suffer with constipation and diarrhoea your digestion might be influencing your chance of conceiving.<br />

<strong>How healthy is your digestion?</strong><br />

Fertility starts in the gut – the hormones you need to be fertile require key nutrients from the food you eat.<br />

Take a look at the following statements and answer true or false for each.<br />

• I frequently burp or suffer with flatulence.<br />

• I suffer from bloating and/or abdominal pain especially after eating.<br />

• I suffer from irritable bowel syndrome.<br />

• I regularly take antibiotics.<br />

• I frequently suffer with constipation and diarrhoea.<br />

• I have food allergies or intolerances.<br />

• My stools are pale in colour or float.<br />

• I frequently suffer with heartburn.<br />

Answering true to four or more statements could mean that your digestion may be influencing your chances of conceiving.<br />

Look at ways to improve your nutrient absorption (that is, the health of your gut).<br />

How toxic are you?<br />

A considerable amount of evidence suggests that ‘detoxing’ – 
eating pure foods for a couple of days a week – helps to regulate 
hormones, lower cholesterol, balance blood sugar and improve digestion.<br />

To assess your present toxicity, answer true or false to the following statements.<br />

• My urine is dark and strong smelling.<br />

• I have bowel movements less than once a day.<br />

• I suffer with headaches, fatigue, muscle aches and/or concentration problems regularly.<br />

• Even one cup of caffeine makes me feel jittery.<br />

If one cup of coffee makes you jittery, you might need a detox.

hormones, lower cholesterol, balance blood sugar and improve digestion<br />

<strong>EATING FOR OVULATION</strong><br />

I always think how magnificent a human egg looks when I see images of it – large, regal and ready for the sperm.<br />

The egg needs both nutrients and energy to prepare it for fertilisation and to make its journey to the uterus.<br />

Surrounding your ovarian follicles is a follicular fluid that 
contains hormones and nutrients that nourish the egg before it leaves 
the ovary.<br />

However, this fluid can also contain free radicals that can harm 
the egg. So, above all, healthy eggs need lots of antioxidant foods, 
which neutralize the effects of free radicals.<br />

Then, the natural compound myo-inositol may help improve the 
follicular environment and egg quality and to help balance blood sugar.<br />

Foods rich in inositol include beans, brown rice, lentils, 
cantaloupe melon, citrus fruit, nuts and seeds so make sure you include 
plenty of these in your diet, too.<br />

<strong>THE DIET PLAN AND YOUR CYCLE</strong> <br />

Mood, weight and hormones can change rapidly according to where a
 woman is in her cycle. It is possible to support your body’s monthly 
shifts through your diet.  <br />

In this section I want to encourage you to think about how you feel at each of the stages (phases) in your cycle.<br />

Then, I’ll tell you which foods will help support your shifting 
moods and emotions (a natural by-product of your changing hormones) over
 the course of the month.<br />

Phase one of your cycle<br />

Many women can actually feel the hormonal shift on the first day 
of their period – pent-up tension seems to fall away and a sense of 
relief and calm ensues.<br />

However, like many other women, you may also feel a bit depleted 
or lethargic. Take some time out when your period begins – enjoy some 
quiet time that allows you to conserve and then restore your energy.<br />

Avoid exercising and treat yourself to an early night (or two).<br />

Good sources of iron to help you maintain energy during your period are dried apricots and shellfish.<br />

This is a time for warm, nourishing foods. Choose a diet rich in 
iron and vitamin C, as these nutrients help to replenish the iron that 
you lose with your period.<br />

Vitamin-B-rich foods will help you to regain some energy.<br />

Good sources of iron include lean red meat, pumpkin seeds, beans 
and pulses, dried apricots and raisins, shellfish and dark green leafy 
vegetables.<br />

For B-vitamins include whole grains, lamb, beef, poultry, 
shellfish, eggs, and dairy products, leafy green vegetables, yeast 
extract and nutritional yeast flakes.<br />

Most fruits and vegetables will provide good levels of vitamin C 
(this is essential for iron absorption), but particularly good sources 
of vitamin C include citrus fruits, berries, kiwi fruit, leafy green 
vegetables and red pepper.<br />

If you suffer from period pain, try taking an omega-3 supplement to help reduce levels of inflammation in your body.<br />

<strong>Phase two of your cycle</strong><br />

During this phase, which can vary in length from month to month, 
oestrogen is on the rise as your body prepares for ovulation.<br />

Many women feel great – attractive, flirty, full of libido. This 
is usually a time when you’ll burst with energy – you may feel like 
hitting the gym or pounding the streets (if that’s your thing).<br />

Now is the time to noticesome of the vital signs and secretions associated with this fertile time of the month.<br />

Spicy foods such a curry are rich in capsaicin, isofavones and 
L-arginine, which encourage the body to make nitric oxide (NO). During 
this phase, stock up on your B-vitamins, which are important for 
hormonal balance.<br />

B-vitamins also help with healthy cell division (a crucial part of babymaking).<br />

Lecithin (a phospholipid found in animal products) will help to keep your cell membranes healthy.<br />

Keep eating the vitamin-C-rich foods as this vitamin is thought 
to increase the amount of water in your cervical mucus, making it more 
plentiful.<br />

Foods rich in capsaicin, isoflavones and L-arginine (such as, in 
turn, spicy foods, tofu and watermelon) encourage the body to make 
nitric oxide (NO).<br />

This compound helps to dilate your blood vessels, easing blood 
flow through your whole system, which is good news for your reproductive
 organs (including your genitals, uterus and ovaries).<br />

Finally, for healthy implantation to occur during this crucial 
part of your cycle, your immune system needs to be in optimum 
condition.<br />

For healthy implantation of an egg, the immune system needs to 
be strong. Vitamin D, the workhouse of immunity, is found in salmon, 
sardines and shiitake mushrooms<br />

For this reason, stock up on vitamin D – the workhorse of your 
immunity. Exposing your skin to sunlight is the best way to get your 
body to manufacture this vitamin, but it is also present in salmon and 
sardines, and in shiitake mushrooms (if you’re vegetarian).<br />

<strong>Phase three of your cycle</strong><br />

This is the luteal phase of your cycle. The corpus luteum (the 
ruptured ovarian follicle that produces progesterone to thicken the womb
 lining, close the cervix and maintain a pregnancy) contains a high 
level of betacarotene, which is the orange–yellow pigment found mainly 
in foods such as carrots and butternut squash, as well as other 
vegetables.<br />

Betacarotene is also a powerful antioxidant – a free-radical scavenger that helps protect your cells from damage.<br />

During this phase of your cycle, try to include plenty of 
betacarotene-rich foods in your diet, including butternut squash, 
carrots, collards, kale, spinach, potato and mustard greens.<br />

betacarotene – the orange pigment found in carrots. It is an antioxidant
 and helps protect the cells from damage<br />

<strong>Phase four </strong><br />

If no fertilisation has occurred, your hormone levels start to 
fall.  During this phase you may begin to feel more lethargic again – 
it’s this time (on the run-up to your period) that many women find they 
crave sweet foods.<br />

Remember your 80:20 leeway and allow yourself the odd treat, but
 try to make sure that generally you eat foods that will keep your blood
 sugar stable.<br />

Your cycle begins at the end of this phase – marked by the moment you get your period.<br />

<strong>FULL FAT IS GOOD FOR FERTILITY</strong><br />

Many women make the mistake of substituting foods containing 
fat with low-fat products, thinking they won’t gain weight using them.<br />

However, for fertility – and, for that matter, for weight management – the principle is flawed.<br />

These products often contain trans fats, sugar and sweeteners.

General, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, John 
May, wants parents to help discover their kids’ talents, support and 
help them nurture their life goals.<br />

May, a campaigner, thought leader and storyteller, who has spent his 
career working with young people and advising governments and civil 
societies in the United Kingdom, and around the world, was recently in 
Lagos to attend the 2016 International Award for Young People (IAYP) 
training session, organised for 50 public school pupils in the state.<br />

The pupils, who were drilled in creativity and life-changing skills 
during the three-day camping programme, were formally presented with 
bronze awards and certificates of participation at event.<br />

May, who recalled how his memorable childhood experience and adventures 
helped sharpened and formed his personality, enjoined parents to help 
discover their kids’ talents and passion early so as to support them 
attain loftier heights.

National Director of the group, Ms. Toyin Odu, said the foundation 
has been at the forefront of offering a guide and support for 
youngsters, with a vision to reach more young people from diverse 
backgrounds and independently equip them to succeed in life.<br />

She pointed out that the award provides the necessary framework that 
enable youths to learn life and social skills while developing the 
existing ones.<br />

After failing to rescue Team Nigeria at the just concluded Rio Olympics,
 Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor’s quest to make a quick cash of $10,000,
 in the IAAF Diamond League in Lausanne, Switzerland, hit the rock on 
Thursday night.<br />

Okagbare was one of Team Nigeria’s medal’s hopeful at the Rio 
Olympics, but she could not even make it to the final in both the 100m 
and 200m events. She was part of the country’s 4x100m relay team that 
qualified for the final, but placed last.<br />

On Thursday night in Lausanne, Okagbare dumped the sprints for long 
jump, but her indifferent season went from bad to worse, after the 
seven-time Nigeria 100m queen could only managed a ‘school girl’ leap of
 6.11m. <br />

Okagbare had only two legal jumps in Lausanne with her opening jump of 
6.11m placing her last (sixth) in the final classification after the duo
 of Jones Akela of Barbados and Canada’s Nettey Christable failed to 
show up. 
The Nigerian fouled her second attempt before jumping a mind boggling
 5.95m to end her participation in the event on the night. The 
Sapele-born sprinter is ranked second behind Ese Brume (6.83m) in the 
Nigerian 2016 long jump top list.<br />

However, for her tame effort on Thursday night, Okagbare earned 
$2,000 and one point to bring her total haul in the event to four from 
two meetings (Prefontaine in Eugene, USA and Athletissima in Lausanne, 
Switzerland). <br />

Serbia’s Ivana Spanovic, who won the event with 6.83m still tops the 
Diamond Race with 46 points after garnering all maximum (10) points in 
Lausanne followed by world leader (7.31m) in the event, USA’s Britney 
Reese who was absent in Lausanne and the Canada’s Nettey with 16 and 15 
points respectively. Reigning world and Olympic champion, Tianna 
Bartoletta of the USA finished fifth on Thursday to increase her points 
haul to 13 and is fourth in the ranking. <br />

Meanwhile Okagbare will hope for a better outing today at the Meeting
 de Paris, the twelfth stage of the IAAF Diamond League at the Stade de 
France in Paris, France. The reigning Commonwealth Games double sprint 
champion will be competing in the long jump event and will not only wish
 to avoid the embarrassing display in Lausanne, but also an equally 
disappointing performance she put up six years ago in her first visit to
 the French capital where her third round leap of 6.44m was her only 
legal leap of the evening after fouling the first two and she ended up 
in ninth place.

Chelsea completed 
their surprise swoop for Fiorentina’s former Bolton left-back Marcos 
Alonso for a reported £23 million ($30 million, 27 million euros) on 
Wednesday.<br />

Alonso agreed a five-year contract with the Premier League club as 
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte turned to the Spaniard after missing out 
on several other defensive targets.<br />

The 25-year-old is Conte’s fourth signing since taking charge at 
Stamford Bridge, following the arrivals of France midfielder N’Golo 
Kante, Belgium striker Michy Batshuayi and Portuguese goalkeeper 
Eduardo.<br />

“I’m very happy. It’s a step up in my career and I think this is the 
perfect place for me to continue developing,” Alonso told Chelsea’s 
website.<br />

“It’s time for me to win some titles. It was an easy decision for me

“My family and close friends know Chelsea is the club I have dreamt 
about playing for so I’m really excited about the challenge and I’m 
looking forward to working with my new team-mates.”<br />

Alonso is no stranger to the Premier League having played for Bolton for three seasons.<br />

The Real Madrid youth academy graduate was in the same Wanderers 
defence as Gary Cahill, who is now one of his Chelsea team-mates, and he
 also had a loan spell at Sunderland.<br />

Alonso’s arrival gives Conte options at the back, with the 
possibility of Cesar Azpilicueta switching to right-back and Branislav 
Ivanovic playing in the centre of defence.<br />

With the transfer window shutting later on Wednesday, Chelsea are 
also reportedly set to re-sign Brazil defender David Luiz, who they sold
 to Paris St Germain for £50 million in 2014.<br />

Serena Williams gave notice of her mission when she defeated Russia’s 
Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets to advance into the second round in a
 late night match in her first game in the newly covered Arthur Ashe 
Stadium where she won her first Grand slam title in 1999.<br />

On the other side, second seeded Andy Murray over ran Lukas Rosol of 
Czech Republic also in straight sets that did not convey the closeness 
of the encounter.<br />

Serena jumped to a 5-2 lead in the first set but Makarova won her 
serve to take the eighth game. Serving for the set, Serena was forced to
 deuce, but she delivered an ace to get the advantage point. The second 
ace (timed at 102mph) was challenged but Serena was so sure that she 
went to her seat for the changeover. She had the set six games to three.<br />

Makarova held her serve in second set opener and Serena leveled at love.
 Leading 15-0 in the third game, the Russian hit a double fault but a 
long rally ended in her favour, with a backhand down the line. A 
powerful service return gave Serena break point but it was deuced when a
 Serena backhand shot landed in the net.
Makarova took the game with a slice serve beyond Serena’s reach. In 
the fourth game, Serena shot up 30-0 but netted a low backhand. She took
 the next two points to level two games apiece.<br />

In the fifth game, a volley winner gave Serena 15-0; then 30-love and
 40-0. Then off a second service return, Makarova hit a backhand h deep 
and Serena had the break to lead 3-2.<br />

Serving to extend the lead, the champion delivered her ninth ace 
(114mph), followed by a service winner, then another ace for 40-0. She 
missed a forehand to drop the first game point and also the second but 
at 40-30, she hit a powerful first serve and followed it with a drive 
that took Makarova off the court, forcing an error, for the game; 4-2. 
Serena changed rackets.<br />

The lefty delivered an ace for opener but lost the next point to a 
net-rushing Serena. Although she made a double fault, she pushed Serena 
from side to side and was up 40-30. However, she missed a forehand 
attempt down the line to be deuced.<br />

Serena got the first advantage point but Makarova took her service 
game. Serving to stretch the lead; Serena made her first point but 
double-faulted yet recovered to get game point and she took it with a 
strong second delivery that Makarova sent sailing deep.<br />

Serving to stay in the match, Makarova fell behind 0-30; then pushed 
Serena all over the court before she netted a shot to give Serena three 
match points.<br />

Serena lost the first with a forehand that landed beyond her 
opponent’s baseline. On the second match point, Serena’s service return 
pushed Makarova off the sideline, eliciting a short ball which Serena 
hit down the middle, behind a Makarova running across the baseline. The 
set and match ended 6-3.<br />

All through the match, Serena was the very epitome of calmness. When 
she was told that the victory was her 98th victory in her history at the
 US Open, she asked “Really?”<br />

In his match against Lukas Rosol of Czech Republic, ranked 81 in the 
world, Murray registered his characteristic hustling style from the very
 first point, although he lost it. He also lost the second with a volley
 winner by Rosol but delivered a service winner to level at 30-all 
before taking the game.<br />

Rosol held serve to level 1 game apiece. Although Murray opened the 
third game with a double fault, he scampered all over the court 
retrieving balls and succeeded in taking game for a 2-1 lead.<br />

Games went with serve until the sixth with Rosol serving. He fell 
behind 0-30 but hit an ace to reach 30-all. He got game point but Andy 
deuced. A net cord in favour of Rosol got him first ad but he lost it on
 a double fault. Then followed an exchange of advantage points until 
Murray got the third, which he clinched for the break to lead four games
 to two. He consolidated without dropping a point, sealing the game with
 an ace. That single break was sufficient to give him the set 6-3.<br />

From that point on, it was downhill for the Czech. Murray broke his serve in the very first game and held for a 2-0 lead.<br />

Serving in the third game, Rosol was up 30-15 but made three 
consecutive double-faults to lose the game. Murray promptly held for a 
4-0 lead. Lukas won the fifth game on his serve and Murray stretched the
 lead to 5-1. The remaining games went with serve and the second set was
 Murray’s 6-2.<br />

The third set started with Lukas serving and he held without dropping a point. So did Murray.
In the fifth game, Murray lost a break point at 30-40 and banged his 
racket on court at the missed opportunity. He eventually took the game 
and held serve to lead 4-2. Rosol lost his serve to hand Murray the 
seventh game.<br />

Serving for set, Murray lost the first two points. A service return 
error reduced tally to 15-30 and a volley winner leveled at 30-all. 
Murray took the next point to reach match point, which he sealed with an
 ace. After the match, he commented that he served well, and faced no 
break point all through the match. He said that after he got the first 
service break, he was able to relax and play well.<br />

Serena Williams will be aiming to step it up against Vania King on 
Thursday as she eyes a third-round spot in the US Open, where Andy 
Murray seeks to move closer to a second Grand Slam title of the season.<br />

World number one Williams, who matched the Open Era record for Grand 
Slam titles with her 22nd at Wimbledon, said she had plenty of room for 
improvement after a 6-3, 6-3 first-round win over Ekterina Makarova.<br />

“I think I can get a lot better,” said the US superstar, who fired 12
 aces and 27 winners against the Russian lefty — and said she’d have to 
wait and see if the work reignited the painful inflammation in her right
 shoulder.<br />

Even if it does flare up, Williams has to be considered a strong 
favorite against her 87th-ranked compatriot King, a wild card she 
trounced 6-1, 6-0 in their only prior meeting, in the second round of

become the fourth man to reach all four Grand Slam finals in a calendar 
year, has a longer history against Spain’s Marcel Granollers.<br />

But the Scot can go in with confidence having won six of their seven 
encounters — the most recent at the Indian Wells hardcourt Masters in 
March.<br />

Murray was delighted to get past tough Czech Lukas Rosol in straight 
sets in the first round, sparing himself an ultra-late night on Tuesday.<br />

On Thursday he’ll face the different conditions of an afternoon match
 — with predicted scattered showers making it possible the new roof on 
the Arthur Ashe stadium court could be called into action, after being 
closed for the first time during light rain on Wednesday night.<br />

If so, Murray will be ready.<br />

“I think it’s great,” Murray said of the $150 million retractable 
roof, which he practiced under before the tournament kicked off.<br />

“It’s very quick too to open and close. Shouldn’t be too many delays. For players it’s a good thing.”<br />

Other marquee players eyeing a place in the last 32 on Thursday

new captain of world champions Germany following Bastian 
Schweinsteiger’s international retirement.<br />

“For me it is a great honour,” said Neuer after the German Football 
Association (DFB) announced his appointment on their website.<br />

“It makes me proud to be captain of the team, but we all know that we

Having made his international debut in 2009, in a 7-2 win against the
 United Arab Emirates in Dubai, Neuer has kept 25 clean-sheets in 71 of 
his Germany appearances.<br />

He was between the posts when they won the 2014 World Cup title and 
was voted the best goalkeeper in the world in 2013, 2014 and 2015.<br />

The 30-year-old will wear the captain’s armband for Germany’s opening 2018 World Cup qualifier away to Norway in Oslo on Sunday.<br />

Head coach Joachim Loew said he was in the luxurious position of having several candidates to choose from.<br />

Neuer’s Bayern team-mates Jerome Boateng, Thomas Mueller and Mats Hummels were all touted as options by the German media.<br />

“In the national team, we are in the fortunate position that we have 
several leading players who fit the format and a captain’s profile,” 
said Loew, who has been Germany’s boss for the last decade.<br />

“For me, Manuel Neuer was the logical successor to Bastian Schweinsteiger.<br />

“He brings everything to the table that I’d wish for in a captain.<br />

“His sporting achievements are outstanding. Manuel is always there for the team, he is a team player and an absolute role model.<br />

“He accepts responsibility, but is always calm and collected.”<br />

Although he has been named as Schweinsteiger’s permanent replacement,
 the Oslo qualifier will not be the first time Neuer has captained his 
country.<br />

He has skipper in five of Germany’s six matches at June’s Euro 2016 
which Schweinsteiger had started on the bench after recovering from a 
knee injury before the European championships.<br />

Neuer has worn the captain’s armband in a total of 14 internationals,
 starting with Germany’s 4-2 defeat to Argentina in Duesseldorf in 
September 2014, in the wake of their World Cup triumph.<br />

Lothar Matthaeus, who captained Germany to the 1990 World Cup title in Italy, says Neuer is the right man for the job.<br />

“He has the personality, the demeanour and the reputation, within the
 team, to make a really good captain,” said the 55-year-old Matthaeus, 
Germany’s most capped player.<br />

A reader poll in Germany’s top daily newspaper Bild made Bayern 
defender Jerome Boateng the people’s choice, but the centre-back only 
narrowly won the survey with 37 percent, compared to 34 for Neuer.<br />

 hugely popular WhatsApp smartphone messaging service was briefly 
blocked by a Brazilian court Tuesday for the third time in less than a 
year after failing to surrender user data to police.<span></span><br />
<article data-post-id="157714" data-post-type="post">The latest drama ended after the Supreme Court president, Ricardo 
Lewandowski, accepted an appeal against a lower court order that shut 
down the service nearly four hours earlier.<br />

“The suspension of service apparently violates the fundamental 
precept of freedom of expression and communication,” the Supreme Court 
said, adding that Lewandowski found that the lower court judge’s 
decision seemed “not very reasonable and not very proportional.”<br />

WhatsApp gradually resumed normal service after the high court’s ruling.<br />

This had been the fourth court-ordered suspension of WhatsApp, which 
is owned by social media giant Facebook, since February 2015 and the 
third in the last 12 months.<br />

The long-running dispute pits Brazilian authorities’ insistence that 
they need access to communications between alleged criminals against 
Facebook’s argument that it is protecting privacy and freedom of 
communication.<br />

In the last incident, in May, the blockage lasted a day before being lifted on appeal.<br />

The shutdowns have angered users reliant on the free app. Cell phone 
fees for texting and calls are high in Brazil and WhatsApp’s group chat 
and image-sharing functions have become embedded in everyday social 
interaction.<br />

“We hope that this puts an end to blocks that have punished millions 
of Brazilians and that people can continue using services like WhatsApp 
to stay in touch with those who matter to them,” the company said in a 
statement.<br />

– Nationwide block –<br />
Earlier, lower court Judge Daniela Barbosa had ordered telecom companies
 to put an immediate nationwide stop to WhatsApp services.<br />

Barbosa blasted Facebook as irresponsible for refusing “to provide 
information that will be critical to the success of an investigation and
 later to bolster the criminal case.”<br />

It was not clear what was involved in the criminal case, but Barbosa 
said Facebook had been issued with three requests to provide messages to
 police investigators in Duque de Caxias, north of Rio de Janeiro. The 
19-page court ruling said Facebook must comply or face fines of 50,000 
reais ($15,265) a day.<br />

WhatsApp was defiant, calling the order an “indiscriminate” threat to
 “people’s ability to communicate, to run their businesses and to live 
their lives.”<br />

The company said it hoped “to see this block lifted as soon as possible.”<br />

– Judge’s anger –<br />
Billionaire Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg called the May shutdown “very scary in a democracy.”<br />

But in the latest ruling, Barbosa criticized Facebook’s attitude, 
saying the company responded to Brazilian police with its own list of 
questions demanding explanations, adding that these were made in 
English, as if Brazil were “some small republic.”<br />

The judge said those mourning the loss of WhatsApp “should remember 
that the main victim of the crimes being investigated is society itself,
 with the certainty that all the time, new victims are being created and
 new crimes are being committed while the judiciary is unable to stop 
the incidents or punish those responsible.”<br />

WhatsApp responded in its statement that it doesn’t comply in 
revealing the encrypted communications because “we cannot share 
information we don’t have access to.”<br />

WhatsApp is estimated to be used by 100 million Brazilians, making 
Brazil the second biggest user country after South Africa, according to 
data cited by the court.<br />

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of Lagos State Police 
Command have arrested one Segun Adeyefa, a teenager, for allegedly 
selling bar soap as mobile phones to unsuspecting members of the public.<br />

The 18-year-old, who was trying to defraud an unsuspecting victim in 
traffic, was caught in the act by RRS operatives on routine patrol of 
Ikorodu motor-park.<br />

Upon his arrival at RRS’s headquarters in Alausa, the suspect 
confessed that before he was caught, he had defrauded one person who 
wanted to buy the phone of N3,500.<br />

He said he was lured into the fraudulent act after he fell victim to fraudsters using the same tactics about a year ago.
“I got involved in this after I was swindled by two guys about a year
 ago through this method. I had the intention of buying a phone but 
unknowingly to me, it was a cut-to-size bar soap that looked similar to a
 phone shape.<br />

“The two guys approached me on my way to work. Then I was learning 
plumbing work somewhere around Ikorodu. I bought the phone, which was 
advertised to me as ‘London-used’ for N2,500.<br />

“After I left the place, I checked the phone I bought and to my surprise, discovered it was a bar of soap .<br />
It was then I promised myself to revenge by doing same to other people.”<br />

On his modus operandi, he said: “I mastered the tactics to swindle 
unsuspecting members of the public. The item contained cut-to-size soap 
and carton, wrapped together with a cello tape.”<br />

The suspect, who lives at No. 81, Oriwu Road, Ikorodu, further 
revealed that: “What I usually do is called exchange. My prospective 
victims will have the mind of buying handset from me but unknowingly to 
them I would have changed the real handset with the soap.<br />

“I will engage them in discussion after showing them the real phone 
initially. In the process of bargaining for the price, I will change it 
with the aid of white handkerchief to fake phone and I will tell them to
 keep the phone inside their pockets immediately because people are 
watching us. As soon as the buyer leaves the spot, I will immediately 
change my location and move to another place.”<br />

While confirming the arrest, the state Police Public Relations 
Officer, Dolapo Badmos, a superintendent , warned the general public to 
be wary of individuals who approach them to buy phones on highways so as
 not to fall victim to conmen.<br />

She said: “Items such as fake phones, bar soap cut to size, shirts, 
some amount of money and packets of envelopes cut to carton-sizes were 
recovered from him. The suspect has been transferred to Lagos State Task
 Force on Environment for prosecution.”<br />

President Barack Obama goes off the beaten track Thursday — way off — to a marine reserve in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.<br />

Obama will take Air Force One three hours west from his native 
Honolulu, to Midway Atoll on the far northwestern tip of the Hawaiian 
island chain.<br />

Until recently, the area was perhaps best known to military history buffs.<br />

Seventy-four years ago, the Battle of Midway was a decisive naval 
fight in World War II that turned the tide of the war against Japan.<br />

More recently, Midway has become a cause celebre for conservationists.<br />

The atoll is situated at the heart of Papahanaumokuakea, a vast Pacific marine reserve.<br />

Around 40 people live and work on Midway, mostly US Fish and Wildlife Service staff.<br />

But the shores and waters are home to more than 7,000 species, including black coral, which can live for 4,500 years.<br />

In 2006, President George W. Bush gave the area protected status, creating what was then the world’s largest marine reserve.<br />

That foreshadowed something of a trend, according to the Pew 
Charitable Trusts, which lobbies for the establishment of more protected
 maritime areas.<br />

Since Bush’s decision “more than a dozen large-scale highly protected
 marine reserves have been created around the globe, including nine 
larger than the original Hawaiian monument,” the foundation said.<br />

Obama recently announced his decision to quadruple the size of 
Papahanaumokuakea and make it the world’s largest marine reserve again.<br />

“This is an area twice the since of Texas, that’s going to be 
protected and allows us to save and study the fragile ecosystem 
threatened by climate change,” he said.<br />

“Teddy Roosevelt gets the credit for starting the national park 
system, but when you include a big chunk of the Pacific Ocean, we now 
have actually done more acreage.”<br />

– Into the blue –<br />
Obama will begin his half-day visit by meeting the humans of the US Fish and Wildlife Service.<br />

He will then tour the island and give a statement to imported reporters on Turtle Beach.<br />

The White House has coyly stated that Obama may “interact directly 
with the wildlife,” likely code for trading his business suit for a wet 
suit and jumping in the water.<br />

“Ancient islanders believe it contained a boundary between this life 
and the next,” Obama said of the atoll. “Hundreds of brave Americans 
gave their lives there in defense of the world’s freedom.”<br />

For the outgoing president, the visit is part of an eight-year effort
 to put the environment and tackling climate change higher on the 
political agenda.<br />

While Bush created Papahanaumokuakea, he also earned international scorn by rejecting the global climate deal reached at Kyoto.<br />

Obama, in contrast, has led the charge to secure the recently struck Paris climate agreement.<br />

After a brief stop back in Hawaii, Obama is expected to announce the 
joint formal joining of that accord with President Xi Jinping during a 
visit to China.<br />

Dozens of Sri 
Lankan nationalists rallied outside the United Nations compound in 
Colombo Thursday as Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited the island, 
protesting against the UN’s actions during a prolonged civil war. <br />

Police held back the demonstrators led by Buddhist monks as they 
tried to march on the compound just before Ban arrived on the first full
 day of his two-day visit to Sri Lanka. <br />

“UN, where were you?” said one placard, which carried a photograph of
 a victim of a bombing blamed on Tamil Tiger rebels who were crushed by 
security forces in May 2009.<br />

The protesting ultra-nationalists accuse the UN of siding with Tamil 
rebels while hardliners in the Tamil community also criticise it for 
failing to protect civilians during Sri Lanka’s 37-year ethnic war.<br />

“The UN was silent when Tiger terrorists were bombing and massacring 
our people,” Buddhist monk Akmeemana Dayaratne said as protesters handed
 over a petition to the UN office to be given to Ban. <br />

“Now the UN is asking for investigations to punish us for defeating 
terrorism,” he said, referring to the UN’s call for the island to probe 
war crimes committed during the conflict.<br />

A police official outside the UN offices, located in a tightly 
guarded area of the capital, said officers had obtained a court order 
preventing protests to avoid breaches of the peace.<br />

“We did that because we feared that any protest could lead to unrest,” he said, requesting anonymity.<br />

Ban’s convoy arrived at the compound shortly after the protesters had been peacefully dispersed.<br />

The UN leader held talks with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on 
Wednesday evening after arriving in Sri Lanka from Myanmar, and is due 
to meet with President Maithripala Sirisena later Thursday.<br />

He is also due to deliver a public lecture on peace and development 
and travel to the war-battered northern Tamil heartland of Jaffna, 
before leaving on Friday.<br />

Sri Lankan diplomats said they were keen to discuss the new 
government’s reconciliation efforts following the civil war that claimed
 at least 100,000 lives between 1972 and 2009.<br />

The UN has been pushing for a special court to investigate 
allegations that up to 40,000 Tamil civilians were killed by government 
forces in the final months of fighting.<br />

President Sirisena, a member of the majority Sinhalese community who 
came to power in January last year, has pledged to punish those 
responsible for war crimes during the conflict.<br />

Charismatic Revival Ministry, Pastor Simon Onyeananam, has urged 
Nigerians to be patient with President Muhammadu Buhari as he endeavours

Onyenanam said the programme, which starts on Friday, September 2 and
 runs through all the Fridays in the month from 10p.m. to 4a.m., was 
divinely ordained to bring hope to Nigerians, especially in this time of
 economic recession.<br />

“This is no longer the issue of religion; we are talking about 
Nigerians being saved at the end of times. Nigerians should care less of
 what is happening in the country, they should rather be careful about 
their relationship with God, because the times we are now in call for 
sober reflection. ‘My September to Remember’ provides that opportunity 
for Nigerians to seek spiritual rebirth and return to God,” he said.
