The iPhone 8 is not due to come with a physical home button, meaning the fingerprint sensor for Apple's Touch ID will need to be built into the device's screen. The touch ID fingerprint sensor is very important as it unlocks the phone and logs in into different programs and accesses Apple Pay.
Apple will launch three new iPhone models in the fall, including one with a 5.8-inch OLED display and two with LCD displays, according to Nikkei Asian Review. It will be the first time Apple will be using this surprisingly unorthodox type of technology in smartphones.
"Apple has selected neither Synaptics' Natural ID touch fingerprint sensor nor Qualcomm's Sense ID fingerprint technology for its new OLED iPhones, and chose to use its own Authentec algorithm combined with Privaris glass identification technology to redesign a new fingerprint ID solution", according to industry sources.
The iPhone 8 will feature Apple-designed fingerprint sensor technology, DigiTimes reported (via Mac Rumors), citing sources familiar with the development.
TSMC will be the company in charge of building and producing the new Ultrasound Touch ID of the iPhone 8.
That last one is the phone Apple fans will probably want - the "10th anniversary" iPhone, with a better "OLED" screen, redesigned fingerprint sensor, and likely other cutting-edge technologies that haven't even been rumored yet. According to Toms Guide, the new fingerprint ID solution of the iPhone 8 is the main reason why production is at a later date, and is moved to September.
The iPhone 8 is expected to come with revolutionary camera technology. Multiple supply chain watchers in recent weeks have said they believe production on the "OLED iPhone" will not start until September, which suggests the high-end iPhone "8" may not go on sale in September, as has been the case for years.
